Darkness Watching Cover Reveal

I can see you.... Those eyes are a little creepy.

Darkness Watching by Emma L. Adams

Seventeen-year-old Ashlyn is one interview away from her future when she first sees the demons. She thinks she’s losing her mind, but the truth is far more frightening: she can see into the Darkworld, the home of spirits– and the darkness is staring back.

Desperate to escape the demons, Ash accepts a place at a university in the small town of Blackstone, in the middle of nowhere – little knowing that it isn’t coincidence that led her there but the pull of the Venantium, the sorcerers who maintain the barrier keeping demons from crossing from the Darkworld into our own world.

All-night parties, new friendships and a life without rules or limits are all part of the package of student life – but demons still stalk Ash, and their interest in her has attracted the attention of every sorcerer in the area. Ash is soon caught between her new life and a group of other students with a connection to the Darkworld, who could offer the answers she’s looking for. The demons want something from her,  and someone is determined to kill her before she can find out what it is.

Darkness Watching releases September 30th!

Emma spent her childhood creating imaginary worlds to compensate for a disappointingly average reality, so it was probably inevitable that she ended up writing fantasy and paranormal for young adults. She was born in Birmingham, UK, which she fled at the first opportunity to study English Literature at Lancaster University. In her three years at Lancaster, she hiked up mountains, skydived in Australia, and endured a traumatic episode involving a swarm of bees in the Costa Rican jungle. She also wrote various novels and short stories. These included her first publication, a rather bleak dystopian piece, and a disturbing story about a homicidal duck (which she hopes will never see the light of day).

Now a reluctant graduate, she can usually be found in front of her writing desk, creating weird and wonderful alternative worlds. Her debut novel The Puppet Spell, published in 2013 by Rowanvale Books, is a fantasy tale for young adults and the young at heart, inspired by her lifelong love of the fantastical, mythology, and video games. Emma also writes supernatural fantasy novels for older teens and adults. Her next book,Darkness Watching, is the first in the upper-YA/New Adult Darkworld series, and will be published in September 2013 by Curiosity Quills Press.

Sadly, I do not have a review today, due to the fact that I actually can't read all three of these books in three days with the amount of free time that I've had recently. I'll do my best to get the third review up soon, but until then, you'll just have to stare longingly at the cover of Emergence.

In the mean time, I have a very important food related piece of information to share with you. In yesterday's post, I told you why I really don't like to cook that often, and that really the only exception is desserts. Well, there just so happens to be one website that I get practically all of my recipes from, and that is Chocolate Covered Katie.

Katie is amazing! All of her recipes are vegan, and even though I'm not one, it tends to make them really healthy compared to other versions. She likes to make a lot of copycat recipes with well known treats that actually lead you along the short road towards heart failure. Even though her versions are a lot better for you, they still taste just as awesome!

My personal favorite recipe is actually not one of her copycat recipes, but something she came up with on her own. It's a deep-dish cookie pie. So what's the catch? IT'S MADE OUT OF CHICKPEAS! I personally can't stand either the taste or the smell of those little brown nuggets, so I was a little apprehensive, but eventually I gave in to all of the praise it was given on her website and decided to try it. I swear, you can't even tell that they're in there! It just tastes like a really moist and really thick cookie. They best part is that I'm actually allowed to eat a lot of it at once!

If you're interested (which you should be by now!) then you can find the original recipe here and the no-sugar added version (which I haven't actually tried yet) here.

Emergence Book Tour Day 2: Review & GIVEAWAY

Day Two is here! If you're interested in learning more about this tour, you can read my first post about it here, but if you already know what's going on, then here's Seeds of War!

Seeds of War by Rachel E. Fisher

The mission of Eden must be fulfilled and Eden’s best Seekers are needed. Forming a new group they dub the Seeders, Fi, Asher, and Sean are joined by a new addition as they set out to bring hope and support to the Topsiders in the form of radios and heirloom seeds. Their experiences Topside prepare them for the threat from marauding gangs they call Lobos, but it is a different, less obvious sort of threat that takes them by surprise. As radio broadcasts begin to reconnect Eden and the Topsiders, the Seeders stumble upon mysterious broadcasts from unknown stations. When two of their own new radio stations go silent within days of each other, Fi and her companions realize that something is terribly wrong. Eden finds itself pitted against a growing and unknown force as their very mission lights the flames of war.

So now for the food related tidbit of the day! While I may enjoy cooking at times (mostly desserts), I usually find that I don't have the kind of patience to orchestrate beautiful meals every day. Some of it probably stems from the fact that I'm so busy, and any time that I spend just waiting around (like while food is cooking) just feels like time wasted. While I may not necessarily eat quickly, I don't like all of the down time that comes with cooking. I feel like if I leave the food unattended for too long, then it will end up being destroyed, and there never seems to be enough safe time for me to be able to wander off and work on something else while I wait. Does this bother anybody else, or is cooking your relaxation time?

Man, this book was deep. It explored a lot of very prominent philosophical issues, like the nature of humanity, in a way that made it applicable not only to the events in Seeds of War, but also to our own world. Through different characters, Rachel Fisher brought up the topics of the right of one human being to end the life of another, the dilemmas that spring from acting on new knowledge and technologies without truly understanding the possible consequences, and most importantly, in my opinion, whether or not we have the right to change the world around us.

That final question was one that Fi had to ask herself many times in this novel as she began to understand the reasons for why the Famine and the Sickness started in the first place. She had already lost multiple family members to them, and had originally believed that they were just the effects of the human race pushing nature too far. That was the story that the survivors were left to believe, but soon she may realize that the explanation is not as simple as it may seem.

Fi ends up questioning many things in this book, usually due to this "unknown force" with their "mysterious broadcasts," that we learn about. They start to make her question everything she believes about the Famine and even humanity as she is forced to decide if her world even deserves a second chance. Suddenly she's left to wonder if this "enemy" is the one who's been lying to her or if there really is a serpent hiding in Eden.

She has to make a lot of tough choices in this book, but I feel like, this time, she's ready for them. She started of Eden's Root as a thirteen-year-old girl, and one of my complaints about the book was that she acted much too mature to be so young. She's still young in this sequel, but now I feel like she's finally grown into the character that Rachel Fisher introduced me to in the first novel.

She doesn't really seem like a little girl anymore, which is sad because she should be able to be. Near the end of the previous novel, Asher told her that the Famine had taken away every opportunity she had to just be a girl, turning her into a warrior before her time. Fi is ridiculously strong, though, so she's completely willing to take all of this in stride if it means protecting everyone else. There is, however, one point in the novel where she does just get to be a very happy girl, but you'll just have to read the book to figure out what it is!

Emergence Book Tour Day 1: Review, Recipe, & GIVEAWAY!!!

I love Prism Book Tours so much. Ever single tour that I've had the pleasure of embarking upon with Laura, the owner, has been so much fun, so of course I jumped at the chance to join this one. An awesome tour theme, plus three even more awesome books? What more could I ask for?

So what is this awesome theme, you ask? Why, only one of my favorite things in the world: FOOD! It plays such a huge role in this trilogy for very interesting reasons, but luckily I plan on talking about it in a much lighter tone. Basically, the plan for these next three days is for me to share one of my favorite recipes (or some other fun food related thing) each time the tour stops here along with my review for one of the books in the trilogy. Today we've got the first one up, so without further ado, here is the very beginning of the Eden's Root Trilogy!

Eden's Root by Rachel E. Fisher

The year is 2033 and the world hovers on the edge of explosion as unexplained crop deaths lead to severe global food shortages. In the United States, the Sickness is taking lives slowly, creeping its way into every family. Fi Kelly has already faced the Sickness in her own family, toughening her beyond her years. But a shocking confession from her dying father will push her toughness to its absolute limits. Saddled with an impossible secret and the mission of saving her little sister, Fi sets out to transform herself into the warrior that she must become to survive the coming collapse. Along the way, she will discover that evil can be accidental and that love can be intentional.

I am a huge fan of chocolate. It's actually pretty bad. Cacao is like nature's perfect gift to the world, and I truly feel like it should be treated as such. So, to honor this incredible creation, I spent my summer a few years ago trying to perfect a chocolate lava cake recipe. I ended up eating something like two of those a week. Not that I'm complaining. It turns out that the real trick is to refrigerate the batter for a few hours before you cook it, so that you can ensure that the inside is still filled with it's chocolatey goodness. Of course, this isn't a perfect recipe, but it's a lot less labor intensive than some can be, and it's actually not ridiculous unhealthy. I wouldn't exactly say that it's a good idea for you to eat them every day, but sometimes the soul needs to be fed too.

Ingredients

3/4 cup ounces all-purpose flour
2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup unsalted butter
2/3 cup granulated sugar
2/3 cup packed brown sugar
1 cup egg substitute
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 (2.6 ounce) bar dark (71% cocoa) chocolate
powdered sugar (optional)
vanilla ice cream (optional)

Preparation
  1. Leave the butter out to soften while preparing the other ingredients.
  2. Chop up the dark chocolate bar.
  3. Mix together flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Beat the butter in a large bowl for 1 minute, and then thoroughly blend in the granulated sugar, brown sugar, egg substitute, and vanilla.
  5. Fold in the dry mixture and half of the chopped up chocolate.
  6. Divide the batter evenly into oven-proof small dishes (I use glass ramekins), and place the remainder of the chocolate on top of each of the dishes of batter.
  7. Cover each of the dishes with foil and refrigerate for anywhere from 4 hours to 2 days.
  8. Remove the dishes from the refrigerator, letting them stay at room temperature for around 10 minutes, and preheat oven to 350°.
  9. Uncover the dishes and place them on a cookie sheet to bake for 21 minutes or until the cakes are slightly crusty on the top.
  10. (optional, but it really shouldn't be) Sprinkle the cakes with powdered sugar and serve with ice cream.

Now that you've all decided to make some chocolate lava cakes, here's my review for Eden's Root!

One of my favorite things about reading books set in the not so distant future is the idea that something like this may actually happen. The thought is a little unsettling, but I think that it makes a novel a lot more relateable because the readers are imagining how they would react if they were in a situation similar to the characters in the novel. It adds a really interesting perspective, and every action carries a lot more weight because some part of us may believe that what we're reading may not turn out to be as fictitious as we originally thought.

I felt very similarly with Eden's Root, though I don't know if I can accurately compare myself to Fi. For someone as young as she is, she turns out to be a lot tougher than I would have ever been able to be. She leads people five times her age with courage and strength, and takes all of the realities of her new world in stride. Sometimes it was really hard for me to believe that she was only thirteen-years-old when she started training because she always acts so mature throughout the journey.

Though the majority of this book is told in third person limited, leaning towards her perspective, there are two other people that also get to share some of their thoughts: Sean and Asher. Fi doesn't really meet Asher until a little after halfway through the novel, but there are one or two instances before that point when we read things from his perspective. Honestly, I do wish that there were a few more of those passages before they meet up because the jump from the pre-Famine Asher in the beginning to the version of him that Fi meets is very large. He explains some of that story to Fi, but I still feel like my idea of him would have been strengthened if I got to see the progression from his point of view as it happened.

Sean is the one I'm still trying to figure out. I really liked him in the beginning of the novel because of how much he cared for Fi and the rest of his family, but I started getting a little peeved with him later on. I really was rooting for him for most of the novel and mentally begging Fi to just give in and give the poor guy a chance, but once Asher was introduced into the picture, I started to have doubts. Now, that's not my excuse for saying that the best friend should never win because I completely disagree there. I love to root for the best friend, and they are almost always my original preference. The only problem is that whenever a love triangle is introduced, the best friend kind of starts being a bit of a jerk. I don't really understand why, but that seems to be the natural progression in most books like this. The new guys comes in, the best friend starts acting all bratty and snooty, and suddenly instead of me wanting them to get the chance I thought they deserved, I really just want them to shut up.

That being said, Sean did manage to redeem himself as time went on. I'm very proud of how maturely he was eventually able to handle everything, even if he did have to endure a few rough patches in order to get there. The progression of the relationship between Fi and Asher couldn't have been easy for him to watch, and I certainly know that it wasn't easy for me to read. Now, I know that I don't live in the type of world present in Eden's Root, and that people act differently when they are put to the test, but I still feel like they got way too chummy very quickly. If you look at their first meeting to where they were less than a day or two later, you can see that it's a little suspicious. The big surprise at the very end was a little too soon for me, but like I said, it's not like I completely disagree with all of the reasoning behind it. My reaction was more like "eh, I'm not so sure about that" than "HAVE YOU TWO BOTH LOST YOUR MINDS?!."

So aside from Sean's new attitude (which really didn't even last that long anyway), and the much too rapid development of all of the relationships, I really don't have all that much to complain about in this book. I loved the scientific explanations behind the Famine that Fi's father gave her, as well as all of the other glimpses into how the Sickness changed her family. I also really enjoyed how Rachel Fisher looked at the way people can change when they really aren't given another choice if they want to survive, no matter who they started out as.

The book flew open and a gust of wind whipped my curls around my face. The pages riffled back and forth before coming to a halt, open at the first page. This was getting a little weird. I was about to slam the book shut when words began to appear of their own volition, right before our eyes.

“Um, Elliot. Can you see that? Or am I as crazy as Dad?”

“I can see it,” he whispered.

Immagica, the place where anything is possible, but not always controllable. Enter at your own risk.

“What a load of crap,” I said, picking the book up. The new line of text flickered gold and pulsed, on then off, then on again, like a flashing, neon sign. I gingerly picked up the corner of the page and peeked under it to the next, but it was blank.

“How do we enter?” Elliot asked, leaning into me and staring at the book.

“Why do you keep asking me all these questions? You’re here, you know as much as I do.”

“You’re older, and always acting so much smarter than me,” Elliot said. I poked my tongue out. “That’s real mature.” He rolled his eyes.

“Oh, so you’re Mr Maturity now you’re a teenager.”

“Sometimes I’m more mature than you!”

While we argued, we were oblivious to what was happening. The book riffled its pages again, and another gust of wind hit our faces. Before we knew what was happening, the golden glow exploded from the book and sucked us in. That’s the best way I can describe it. One minute we were in my room, surrounded by my grandmother’s elegant interior decorating, and the next we were enveloped with gold light.

At first I felt Elliot beside me, but then he was gone. The light was warm, like a soft, fuzzy blanket. Then the ground hit me in the face. It was hard and rough. The force of my landing knocked the wind out of me, and I tumbled over myself before coming to a halt on my back. Above me was an azure sky dotted with fluffy, marshmallow clouds. I turned my head and spotted the book lying closed on the ground a few metres away. I tried to move to retrieve it, but it took a few moments before I could roll onto my side and get to my knees.

When I finally managed to stand, I took in my surroundings with wide eyes. The sky may have been blue, but the ground was dirty charcoal. Lumps of gravel mixed with sand and dead grass. It stretched on, and on, nothing but barren wasteland no matter which way I turned. The only break in the landscape was where the horizon met the sky.

A lump of fear rose in my throat. Where was Elliot?

I didn’t know where I was, and I was completely alone.

Review of Trapped Under Ice by M.J. Schiller

Hey, it's Gabby again! Sorry for having disappeared on you all!!! Thank you for being patient and let's celebrate my return with a review of an amazing new book!

Trapped Under Ice by M.J. Schiller

TRAPPED UNDER ICE is a novel about a three time platinum record-producing band whose lead singer, Chad Evans, is haunted by his past. Growing up in an abusive home, then being left alone at the age of thirteen to raise his kid brother, Chad still fights the pain he felt as a child, and the anger it causes, despite being a wildly successful rock star. “Chad [tries] to play his heart out on the stage; but he [can] never quite seem to leave it there.”

Beth Donovan, lunch lady/writer, is thrilled to be enjoying a Trapped Under Ice concert with her daughter, Cassie. Even though it has been three years since her husband, Paul’s, death, sorrow still shadows her life, so the distraction of seeing her favorite group is a welcome one. However, when the concert is over, Beth and her daughter are followed and attacked by two men in one of the stadium’s bathrooms. When Chad and his bodyguard, Pete, come to their aid, an attraction sparks immediately between Beth and the tall singer.

Though the pair is drawn to each other, the relationship goes through numerous trials centered on Chad’s unresolved anger, and Beth’s fear of opening herself up again. In addition they face being separated forever by someone who is sending Chad death threats. Trapped Under Ice is the story of a love-affair fraught with difficulties from without, (ex-girlfriends who resurface, crazed fans who don’t want to take “no” for an answer…), as well as difficulties from within, (jealousy, anger, fear…). Will Chad and Beth be able to rise above these trials and tribulations? Or will they remain trapped under ice?

So, let's all be honest here: wouldn't every female on this planet just LOVE to be the wife/girlfriend/confidant of a famous rocker? Wouldn't every female love to have that simple connection with that perfect someone, and wouldn't it be even better if that perfect someone just happened to be a tall, slim, muscular, rockstar?

After having read this rockstar romance, I was forced to look at another angle of what romance really means. I am now aware that romance isn't just about love, sex, and marriage; it's about being a part of someone who you know will never abandon you and sticking up for what you truly believe in. M.J. Schiller truly captures the essence of that in this amazing, realistic fiction thriller, Trapped Under Ice.

In this book, we have a protagonist, obviously, a Ms. Beth Donovan, who is a widow of three years, left to raise her teenage daughter Cassie. Trapped Under Ice is the name of a famous band (similar to today's Three Days Grace or Muse) who the Donovan ladies are fairly fond of. At the beginning we meet the famous lead singer of the band, Chad Evans (even the name sounds sexy) who has his own personal demons that he deals with through philandering. The gist of the book is about Beth and Chad meeting under scary circumstances, but nonetheless, they feel a spark that neither can seem to deny. After several dates, they become the couple everyone is envious of. Except one person.... the person who doesn't want Chad to be happy. Are these death threats and anonymous notes left for Chad by an envious ex-girlfriend? Or is the culprit closer than Beth and Chad would like to imagine?

Read this amazing book and find out for yourself! Three cheers to Ms. Schiller for doing an outstanding job on her latest novel!

My Rating:

“She’s his only hope,” Pete said aloud to the empty room, “and he’s going to blow it.”

Chad leaned against the door with his eyes shut, breathing a deep sigh of relief. He sensed Pete’s urge to tell Beth everything, every fight he’d been in, his DUI, all of the awful things the old Chad did. But now that he had her in his life, he wasn’t going to stray down that path again.

Then, why the fight tonight? He suddenly felt tired beyond bearing.

“Chad, are you okay?”

Yeah. Now that’s the question, isn’t it? He could hear his father’s voice inside his head like a repeating rifle. “I’m fine.” He sighed in a way that indicated he was anything but. He stumbled over to the bed and fell into it.

She lumbered over to the bed, trancelike, and stood over him, saying at last, “I have to go.”

His eyes popped open. “No. Not yet.” He grabbed her hand and sat up at the end of the bed. “Come here,” he pleaded, pulling her down into his lap. “I’m so sorry, Beth. I should have let you handle it. I shouldn’t have gone berserk. I was a complete and utter ass. Will you forgive me?"

She pushed the hair away from his face with her fingertips, sighing. “I already did. We all make mistakes, Chad.”

I am so ridiculously happy right now! I was so excited when I found out that I was a part of this tour, and now it's finally here! I'm also extremely honored to be able to kick the tour off on the first day, and I'm even happier that I get to showcase such an amazing book!

Independent authors work so hard to get their novel out there, and too often they get such a bad rap. Not every novel that you see published independently is that way because it's not good enough for a publishing house to pick it up! Most of the time, the author just prefers the independent route because it gives them so much more control over how their book is presented to the world. They get to make all of the decisions, like the cover and the blurb, not some snooty team of publicists that may not see their novel the way they do.

They want their baby to be showcased in the best light possible because a book really is like a child. They've nurtured the story its whole life, whether it was something that was planned for years, or more "spur of the moment." They're not about to hand their own child off to a bunch of strangers who think they know what's best! Sometimes authors would much rather just keep the novel in their own hands in order to protect what they've worked so hard to create.

Speaking of something that took a lot of love and care to create, without any further ado, here is the beautiful, completely author-made, Lucifer!

Lucifer by Annabell Cadiz

Have you ever wondered what could be hiding in the shadows?

Well, for eighteen-year-old Zahara Faraday, she doesn’t have to wonder. You see she comes from a lineage of Light Witches, those who have chosen to help protect and serve between the supernatural world and the human world. The only problem is Zahara, like her father Solomon, is as human as a human being can be whereas her mother, Mia, and her Aunt Catalina, were born as Light Witches. As a family they hunt down rogue supernaturals—creatures who harm humans or who have committed an act against their kingdom.

Zahara’s hunting skills are usually kept dormant since her parents would prefer she live life as a normal human girl without knowledge of the supernatural world. She plans on doing just that—except when she finds a couple being attacked by fairies, she has no choice but to step in. Before she can return to pretending to be blissfully ignorant, Zahara encounters a problem she isn’t the least equip to handle: Bryan Hamilton, the good looking new co-worker she has to help train. In a heartbeat, her best friend, Becca King, has set her up on a double date with herself and her new crush, Rekesh Saint-Louis, who happens to be the most powerful leader of the biggest Imago Coven in South Florida –supernatural creatures with the ability to control water . . . and suck out human souls.

Zahara has no time to focus on how she’s going to explain her double date with her best friend and the enemy they have a tentative truce with to her parents because soon one of the members of Mia and Catalina’s coven is found murdered with a strange tattoo of a snake with wings carved into his arm.

Zahara is then thrown into a whirlwind battle with an angel determined to have revenge against God, an Imago coven she doesn’t think they should trust, and slew of dream-eating fairies and powerful Nephilims, hybrid children of angels and humans, more than happy to rip her to shreds.

Normal just got a deadlier definition.

Annabell Cadiz was born in the sweltering heat of South Florida. She was raised surrounded by Puerto Rican chefs and band of siblings that weren’t all related to her. A self-proclaimed nerd and book-a-holic (her room does hold much evidence to prove her claims are justifiable), she created TeamNerd Reviews to showcase her EXTREME love for novels. Her debut novel, LUCIFER (SONS OF OLD TRILOGY, #1) was published January 2013.
